Tips for Running a Successful Board Meeting

A successful board meeting, whether either in person or remotely requires careful planning and focus. It’s also important to create an environment of cooperation and collaboration for your meetings that will help participants engage in healthy debate and develop new ideas.

The board chair should be the one to preside at board meetings. This is usually the president or manager of the community association. Every board member should have the opportunity to express their opinion or to ask questions or to raise concerns. Then, vote on the issue. This will prevent any confusion in the future regarding what was discussed, decided on, and finally ratified by the boardroom.

Be clear about the ultimate goal of each item

Include an explanation of the purpose of each item on the agenda. This will prevent confusion or wasting time. It’s also helpful to add a checkbox for each item, indicating if it’s intended to provide information, educate or make a decision.

Don’t make a hasty decision

Many boards feel that they need to make decisions quickly to appease upset homeowners or avoid dragging out an issue that might go away on its own, but this only sets back your board and the community. Besides, rushed decisions are usually not well executed and often lack the necessary input from experts.
